Emil Zátopek was born in 1922 in Kopřivice as the sixth of eight children. He studied at military academy in Prague. At the age of 16 he began working in shoe factory in Zlín. His wife's name is Dana Zátopková.
His first coach was a Jan Haluza. In 1943 he ran his first race at 5000 meters. In 1944 he created the first Czechslovak records for 2000,3000 and 5000 metres.
On the track 5000 meters Emil Zatopek celebrated his first international success. In 1948, Emil Zatopek ran the race track 10,000 meters. In Budapest he created Czechoslovak record time of 30:28,4 minutes. In the same year as the first Czechslovak athlete Zátopek ran 10,000 meters under 30 minutes. In 1948 he won Summer Olympics in London. He became a famous during Olympics Games in Helsinki in 1952. He won gold in the 5000 metres, 10000 metres, and the marathon. He broke Olympic records.
He was one of the best Czechslovak long-distance runners of all times. He had many medals. He was nicknamed the "Czech Locomotive". In 1958 he ended his sports career. In 1997 he was declared the best athlete of the 20th century. He died in Prague in 2000 at the age of 78 years.
