on the brink of something - znamená blízko bodu nebo okamžiku, kdy se má stát něco nepříjemného, nebezpečného, katastrofálního. Např. on the brink of war, extintion, atd.
On the verge - znamená taky, že se má něco stát (ale spíše obecně, ne zlého nebo katastrofálního)
NApř. On the verge of finding a solution, of winning the match, atd.
