The Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FKNK) has stated that it wasn’t necessary for the Maltese Government to negotiate any derogation on spring hunting and trapping.
This is because the derogation which stems from the “Birds” EU directive is effective as a right to all Member States of the European Union and therefore there was no need to apply for it.
The FKNK stated it can produce written evidence to confirm this state of fact that had then been exchanged between the FKNK and Mr. Richard Cachia Caruana, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Permanent Representative of Malta for the EU. This truth, the FKNK said, had been stated by the Federation both verbally and through several documents, leaflets to hunters and trappers, etc., ad nausea prior to EU Membership.
In repayment for all the backing that the Maltese Government has unreservedly given to Birdlife, the latter organisation, aided by the Green Parties, has now revealed as a matter of fact that the Derogation was not a part of Malta/EU negotiations, thus further confirming FKNK’s statements and assertions, the press release said.
"It has to be stated that the manner by which the Resolution was tabled can be termed scandalous, in that this was tabled through some loopholes within the rules of procedures of the EP and should never have been on the agenda,” the FKNK reported.
